I've been truly nervous with the brewery boom in Greensboro as of late. Seems we get a new one every few weeks now. South End puts my worries to rest. The property used to be an unmentioned less quality brewery. The new owners have seriously improved the back area to have hang out space, with sweet hipstery murals lining the brick walls. The inside is about the same as it was, which is still nice and open for drinking and chatting with friends and a wall of games.
Being a beer snob who hates super hoppy IPA's (because a good beer is balanced not just bitter to be bitter) I was impressed with the Intrepid Goat IPA, it has a great citrus nose with a smooth easy finish, that doesn't leave you questioning if you Like IPA's. After the first sip goes down, you remember, "yes I like a well made IPA, not some over hopped mayhem the brewer was trying to flex their beer muscles on". I also drank several Little Bohemia's, this is a great session beer, easy drinking, very reminiscent of Pilsner Urquell or Czechvar. You can drink 3 or 4 and not feel too bloaty.
The food is elevated bar food. Don't expect a steak dinner or anything, but solid sandwhiches (Bahn Mi is good), and great sides. Bar service is quick and solid, its also a nice touch that their POS system links the bar and the kitchen, so you can run one tab with it all.
This will become a go to spot for me. -

Southend Brewing Greensboro. In the former location of Gibbs Hundred Brewing. I've been here a few times, and there are things I like, and dislike about this place. Parking is street only (good luck) or a large expensive parking lot directly behind the place. Inside has been cleaned up and there is now a large patio space out back. It's nice. There is also food on site now, and your tab is good at the food area and the bar. Thats convenient. Service at the bar has been pretty good. Nothing to wow me. But good.
The beer. I'd say for a startup they are doing a great job. Some are better than others but as a whole I've liked what I've had. The smoked Porter was awesome. Wendover River blonde ale was simply amazing. Nice glassware available for purchase. Everything was clean and well kept.
The service at the food counter was good. It's a little pricey for what it is, but at least everything was properly cooked and tasted good. The girl taking orders came to check on us to make sure everything was ok. That was a nice touch. Food was indeed good. I tried the wings, and the bratwurst. Both great. Your choice of sauces are on a counter. Classic Texas Pete and a Maple Honey that was delicious.
Now, the not so good. This place was full of little kids running around, babies screaming and crying. It was literally like a day care! I'm still not sure when or why it became OK to bring little kids, and babies to a bar! Group after group of families with multiple kids kept pouring into this place. Mom and dad are getting loaded and the kids are thinking its play time. We come to a bar to relax and unwind, have a few drinks, not to listen to screaming babies and have little kids running under foot! Besides, what kind of message is this sending the kids?? Come on people. Leave the rug rats and babies at home. This is a BAR not a DAYCARE! -

This place just opened and I always give places that just opened some grace. That being said, there's a lot of room for improvement here.
I had a couple beers, neither of which was standout but I would say they were sufficient. I got two IPAs and neither were memorable, nor particularly great examples of the style. That being said, they definitely weren't bad. The food on the other hand...
We had a 1 lb plates of wings which was 14 FREAKIN dollars and amounted to about 7 wings. The wings were meh, other than the fact that they were clearly frozen, 1 of which wasn't even warm all the way through. Who wants to bite into a cold wing? Gross, I'm lucky I didn't get sick from these insanely expensive wings. The sauces they provided were some really terrible blue cheese, i think it was just Kraft blue cheese dressing and some "honey mustard", that I believe was just runny honey since there was nary a taste of honey. The food was pricey and terrible, what's not to like? They did include about 20 pieces of carrot and celery for some reason, so I basically tried to fill myself up on that.
The venue is really cool. They gave a minor spruce up to the old gibbs tap room, but the standout is the patio outside, which is pretty impressive. Just head right through the brewery to the patio. That being said, I do question the logic of opening a patio just as it's becoming cold outside, but maybe they have heaters coming soon, though there was no evidence of coming heaters.
All in all, pretty uneven, the food was abjectly terrible and expensive, but I see the potential if they tighten up the food for another cool spot in a great location. -

I had the Oktoberfest which was on special for their weekend opening. It was great. I can't comment on any other beers. We loved the space, mostly the outdoors as we take our dogs everywhere with us. It is so spacious and comfortable with a variety of different kinds of seating. Definitely my new favorite brewery to take the fur kids too. Staff was very friendly as well. I didn't notice heaters outside but I hope they have/get them.
